Fireplaces: cleaning, proper use & ignition chimney

  • Factors that determine the frequency of cleaning
  • Construction mistakes and errors in use
  • Useful tips for the firing of the chimney

Each house has a fireplace, a key concern of the owners should be the annual cleaning of the fireplace and chimney. It is a process with multiple benefits, since on the one hand ensures the efficient operation of the system and also prevents inflammations that may be caused by residues of combustion.

Purification of the chimney must not be omitted if the consumption of wood is larger than a tone (two cubic meters of wood) annually. If however the wood consumption is less than one tonne (2 cubic meters), purification can be performed every second year.

Factors however accelerate the concentration of soot and require annual cleaning, even with less amount of burning wood, are:

  • The burning of unsuitable wood (such as green wood, wood from conifers, poplar and the crates, pallets, etc.) Produces much greater amount of smoke and fills faster with kreozoto the chimney.
  • Frequent firing dramatically aggravate the chimney because the fat dripping onto the coals burned, creates fat and flammable deposits on the walls, on which very quickly becomes soot accumulation.
  • The construction and these mistakes are a serious cause accumulation kreozotou the chimney:
    • The absence of insulation makes the exhaust gas cooled faster, climb more slowly and stick to walls.
    • The existence corners and irregularities in the path of the chimney prevents the free flow of exhaust gas resulting in faster accumulation kreozotou at those points.
  • Burning materials other than wood (packaging, brochures, plastics and synthetic products), produce more smoke containing compounds are dangerous not only for your chimney and the environment.

Select Wood

We prefer olive and oak, which have a longer burning and beech, which gives good flame without problems. The pine or fir grab quickly and pay more flame, but we have to use mainly kindling and not for continuous use. Advantageous is the combined use.

Tips for inflammations :

  1. Check if your fireplace has a damper (= metal plate, the closing, isolates the chimney of the fireplace), and if it works normally (seals).
  2. Keep all near the fireplace flammable materials, and removed around the chimney tree branches, wood etc.
  3. If you notice you or your neighbors that your chimney has caught fire:
    • Do not panic.
    • Call the Fire Department.
    • Remove individuals who are at home.
    • Close the damper (thereby stopping the supply of air-oxygen in the chimney and the fire will go out).
    • Remove the wood from burning fireplace, pull out and turn off the water.
    • If the fireplace is closed type, close the door and the introduction of air into the combustion chamber.
    • Be sure to always have on hand a dry powder fire extinguisher.
    • Avoid spilling water on the blazing fireplace because of risk of destruction.
    • Do not use the fireplace before specialist workshop clean the chimney and check for any damage caused.
